The Universe through the Yin Yang Symbol

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

The Universe is energy and there are different types of energies, different frequencies of energies. From the origin point, if there really is one, to infinity, if there really is no end. This energy is in everything. We can call it consciousness, or love, or energy, or even source. Whatever it is, it is found in everything. It is found in rocks, crystals, birds, ants, dogs, cats, fish, flowers, the planets, the stars, and you, and me. If we look at the world and how it works and how it moves, we can see that everything is in pairs. There is good and evil. There is love and hate. There is peace and turmoil. You have two hands, two feet, two legs, two eyes, two ears, upper and bottom lip of the mouth, two nostrils in one nose, two testicles in one scrotum, two sets of vaginal lips (the labia minora and the labia majora), two breasts, and two buttocks, two lungs, two kidneys, two sides of the brain functioning differently as one, and so on. This is the natural state of the human body and since the human body reflects the Universe, the Universe also works in twos. But because these things are two or can be separated in this manner it does not mean that they are separate. The nose, because it has two nostrils is not considered to be noses; it is two in one, two different sides make one whole thing. That is the principal of the body and it is the principle of the Universe.

It is from this idea that there are two sides to everything that we get the yin yang symbol. The yin yang symbol

According to Daoist teachings, the yin, that is the female energy, is represented by the black side of the symbol. The male energy is represented by the white side of the symbol. Notice the dots and the curves of the colors, these things have meaning and importance. The dots tell us that yin energy (the white color, the male energy) has within it the yang energy (the black color, the female energy). The curves of the white and black show how both energies fit together, how they both belong together, and how they look when they are in harmony.

We know that there is evil and that there is good. Simple words: evil and good. When we look at the yin yang symbol as representing the good and evil of the Universe, sex does not matter, it does not matter if you are a woman or if you are a man, either sex can be good or evil. Good and evil can be anyone. And with the yin yang symbol we can see that the essence or the seed for the opposite aspect is in both sides. This means that someone who is evil has some good in him or her; that person has the possibility to be good. When and how this person changes depends on many things and it may not happen in this lifetime or the next. And those that are good can also be evil or bad, because within them there is the essence of the other. Enlightenment and ascension come when balance is achieved between the two different opposing aspects of our existence. What this means is that we have to find that understanding, that compassion towards the side of ourselves that we try to hide, the parts of ourselves that we want to change, and the parts of ourselves that drag us down to misery. This is also means that we have to have a balance between the spiritual worlds and the physical plane. If you are always concerned with the spiritual you begin to ignore the physical world, its lessons begin to pass you by leaving you with nothing, and your evolution is either one-sided or stagnant. The same goes if you focus only on the physical, on the material and material gain; no spiritual knowledge will enter your conscious mind. For some, it is okay and even necessary to ignore and deny the spiritual world. There are many reasons for this and we will talk about it some other time.

As a symbol for sexuality, the yin yang symbol is very helpful. The female energy, represented by the dark side of the symbol, has masculine energy within it. And male energy, represented by the white of the symbol, has female energy. Some are more attuned to their female energy than their male energy and this gives them certain ways of behaving and thinking and expression. It does not matter if the person is a  man, within him there is woman. And within woman there is man.

As it concerns sexuality, we will talk further and explore the yin yang symbol through this lens in other posts. The yin yang is a powerful tool that allows us to expand our consciousness and our awareness. Use it in your meditations when you feel out of balance or when you want to understand more of the world and how it works. I have applied this symbol to many different aspects of my thoughts and have found answers to odd questions through it. For example, this symbol has helped understand my own sexuality and made me realize the masculine and feminine aspects of my character.

I would love to hear if this symbol has helped you or confused you or if you think it is irrelevant. And if it has helped, how so? This symbol has many applications and I think that they don’t all have to be metaphysical or profound. The ying yang symbol shows us that universe is not as complicated as it seems.

Namaste, friends.
